Poem for new moon
October 22 2006
What Is It? The old woman stood
on the moist wooden dock
staring after her husband
chug chug chugging
his way,
in a small white boat,
across the smooth
mirrored surface of the sea
towards his favorite spot
to fish.
Far above him
a fish eagle flew,
through the fall morn,
a soaring presence
buoyed by an updraft.
The woman
pointed to the bird
and then turned to me
where I stood shivering
beside her, stamping my feet
to ward off the cold.
That bird loves to fly
she said
just as my husband
loves to fish.
They would do
nothing else.
Head cocked towards me,
eyes burning bright
as if to warm my very soul,
she asked, as I now ask you:
What is it you
essentially
came here
to do?
